Breathe: Calming Someone with Dementia Starts with Calming Yourself
Dear Carol: I need tips on how to calm my husband who has been diagnosed with both Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia. In the past, he’s been pretty easy to care for compared to many people with dementia. Lately, that’s changed because he gets so easily agitated. Or maybe anxious is a better word. We’ve always been in tune with each other, but now, instead of helping him I get caught up in his anxiety. I feel that I’m constantly failing him. No matter what I do, it can take hours to get him back to a more peaceful place in his mind. Can you suggest some steps to help me do better? Thank you! – AL
