Repetitive Questions in Dementia Stems from Memory Loss and Confusion
Dear Carol: My mother, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, repeats the same question multiple times an hour. I know that’s typical behavior with Alzheimer’s, but it’s driving me nuts. I start out being patient, but before long, my nerves fray and I get testy, usually telling her she’s asked that five times already. Then, of course, I see the hurt, confused look on her face and I feel terrible. I’ll admit that I patience has never been one of my virtues, but I’m working hard on developing more of it. Do you have any tips that can help me deal with this (to me) irritant? – OP
Dear OP: Even knowing that the person with dementia who’s asking repetitive questions can’t help it doesn’t provide caregivers with unending patience. You aren’t alone with this struggle.
