Protecting Older Adults from Scams While Honoring Their Autonomy
Dear Carol: I understand that scammers have always targeted older adults, but technology is making this a nightmare. My 84-year-old mother is generous and willing to share what she has. She’s doing well, yet she’s realistic enough to let me monitor her bill paying and bank account and help manage her medical care. The problem is that she takes satisfaction in donating to charities. This would be fine, but she forgets that she’s already donated, so she donates repeatedly, which she can’t afford. Even more worrying is that she gives out personal information over the phone because “they sounded so nice.” How do I prevent more mistakes and scams while not taking away her ability to spend money and use her cell phone to talk to family and friends? – SG

Many, if not most, reputable charities should be able to prevent further multiple donations if you call and explain.
