Dementia Symptoms Might be Reversible If Caused by Medications or Disease
Dear Carol: Please keep writing about reversible causes of dementia symptoms. My mom, 83, has always been mentally quick and independent. She sees her doctor regularly for checkups and has taken multiple medications through the years. We noticed after the holidays that she seemed both alarmingly confused, and memory challenged. While talking with her, we discovered that at her last checkup she’d been given a prescription for mild anxiety related to a passing event. With her permission, we contacted her doctor and asked that this medication be deprescribed. I knew to do this because of your column. Within a few days, she was back to being herself. – JL
