How to Limit but Not Deny Spending by Someone with Memory Deficits
Dear Carol: My dad is very independent, but he has early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. He lives in an independent living community, does his own grocery shopping, and is quite social. Unfortunately, his memory and judgment are getting faulty, particularly with handling money. He has several credit cards and while he has the money to pay, things get out of hand with his spending on duplicates of things he already has. Worse, I can see that he’s becoming vulnerable to scams. I helped him set up his regular bills online, but he also needs the freedom to spend money independently. Is there a safer way for him to spend without depending on cash? Thank you! – WP
