ADLs and IADLs Explained: What Are They and How Are They Used?
Dear Carol: My mom was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. While she’s pretty normal now other than some short-term memory loss and occasional confusion, I want to be prepared to help her as she experiences more changes. I’m in two different caregiving groups on Facebook and I keep reading about ADLs and IADLs. As I understand it, ADLs have to do with self-care, but I don’t know what IDALs are. Can you explain these terms and tell me what they mean for her future? Thanks! – WP
Dear WP: Great question. Acronyms are frustrating whenever we land in unfamiliar territory and caregiving is no different.
