Caregiver Worried That Mom with Late-Stage Alzheimer’s Sleeps All Day
Dear Carol: I care for my mom in my home. She’s 85, has been living with Alzheimer’s for many years, and is now considered to be in the late stage of the disease. My concern is that she sleeps so much during the day. She also sleeps all night, and I’m thankful for that since she went through the phase of having days and nights turned around. The doctor says not to worry about it because that’s normal at this stage. Since he’s always been kind of dismissive about changes that I report usually saying, “That’s to be expected,” I didn’t feel reassured. I want to make sure that I’m giving Mom the best care I can. Should I just let her sleep when she wants, or am I failing her in some way? – MN
