Rummaging: When People with Dementia Dig Through Drawers or Trash
Dear Carol: I’m struggling. My husband was always super neat, but Alzheimer’s gradually took away his ability to organize even the basics of living. Now, he’s started digging through drawers, waste baskets, and (ugh) garbage cans. It’s like he’s trying to organize everything but instead, he’s creating chaos. He stirs things up and sometimes moves important items to other areas of the house. I never know where I’ll find socks, underwear, or even the mail. I understand it’s not his fault and I try to be patient, but when I’m busy preparing a meal or with some other task, I’m always wondering what he’s up to in the other room. Do you have any suggestions that I can use to keep him safe and me sane? – KE
