The ‘AARP Caregiver Answer Book’ Will Become a Classic
I was honored when asked to provide my thoughts about the then-forthcoming The AARP Caregiver Answer Book by Barry J. Jacobs, PsyD and Julia L. Mayer, PsyD. Since I’ve read other books by this wonderful husband-and-wife duo, I knew it would be a gem. Needless to say, after reading the pre-print PDF, I wasn’t disappointed and enthusiastically provided my thoughts. My copy of this valuable caregiver’s resource has arrived, and it’s all that I thought it would be.
Barry and Julia have both been family caregivers, which provides them with authenticity for counseling others. Their wealth of knowledge is vast; their hearts are warm and generous. Here are the words I offered early on:
The AARP Caregiver Answer Book by Barry J. Jacobs and Julia L. Mayer is a superb companion that family caregivers will repeatedly turn to for support, advice, and affirmation.
The authors came to understand a great truth: their experience as family caregivers is as valuable as their professional training in helping them teach other caregivers. Their kindness and humility are palpable components as they unflinchingly cover the hard questions caregivers face, many of which they experienced themselves. Others in the profession can use this book to round out their understanding of how caregivers think and feel.
The AARP Caregiver Answer Book addresses the real challenges caregivers face in a way that validates their instincts and helps them move forward with confidence. The compassionate language, accessible format, and nuts-and-bolts topics make this book a beacon of light for caregivers who seek answers to their heartfelt questions.
Now that I hold the fresh-off-the-press copy in my hand, I’m even more enthusiastic. The AARP Caregiver Answer Book is sure to become a classic.

“An inspiring read for caregivers! Minding Our Elders is a series of stories about caregiving. But it is much more than that. It’s a book that helps us view aging and community through the lens of someone well versed in eldercare. Author Carol Bradley Bursack has been a caregiver for a neighbor and six elderly members of her family. These experiences made her the perfect person to interview and share the stories of friends and acquaintances. Through crisp writing and a sharp focus, we enter the lives of those struggling to care for loved ones with dementia and other age-related illnesses. As I read Minding Our Elders, I felt myself filling up with both appreciation and admiration for those who adopt the caregiving role. In addition, I was struck with the inherent value Carol sees in our elders. This is a well-written book that will stir your heart!” …Ann C
