5 Positive Effects of Long-term Caregiving
After decades of caregiving, I’ve experienced some negative effects. However, I’ve also experienced positive effects that continue to give me pleasure and enhance my life. I saved the positive aspects of caregiving for the second article because, having recently written about the ill effects on our health caused by negative thinking, it seemed more authentic to me as a writer. Also, as a person, when possible I like to concentrate on the positive. Below are a few of the many things that I feel I have gained, and still am gaining, from long-term caregiving.
Positive effects of long-term caregiving
- Compassion: While I like to think that I’ve always been a compassionate person, and I believe that maturity adds increased compassion to most of us simply because we’ve seen more suffering, caregiving can take compassion even further. When we witness the suffering that many of our loved ones go through for weeks, months, or even years before they die, we can’t help but have compassion for them and for others who suffer.
