Trying to Force In-home Care on Independent Older Adult Can Backfire
Dear Carol: Why can’t my 85-year-old mom see that in-home care would help keep her safe? Her mind is great. She uses a computer and a smart phone without issues and volunteers working online for an arts organization. Mom’s problem is multiple sclerosis (MS) that, while not too aggressive, does affect her balance. She’s also seriously arthritic. Between them, she’s a fall risk. Since she lives alone in her condo, I feel she should hire an in-home care company to have an aide come in for a few hours a day. How can I convince her that I’m right? I’m sick of worrying. – TL
