When Power of Attorney Disagreements Threaten Family Unity Try Reframing
Dear Carol: Our 70-year-old parents announced that they are planning to see an elder law attorney to name a Power of Attorney and do other legal documents. That triggered an argument between my brothers, each of whom thinks he should be the POA. I’ve told them that legal and financial POAs can be different people. I also reminded our parents that assigning POAs is their choice, but the argument has upset them and stalled the process. Who can help with this mess? – YU
