Helping Former Caregiving Dad Regain His Sense of Purpose
Dear Carol: After their retirements, my parents moved to be nearer to me and my family. Unfortunately, Mom was soon diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, so they never had time to become socially integrated into our community. Mom died last year and since then Dad seems to be going through the motions but with no real focus. He’s still a good driver but he rarely goes anywhere except to get groceries. He’s physically healthy and before the move, he was super social. I’m his only son and we’re both veterans, so that helps us connect but it’s not enough. Since Dad was a history teacher, I try to interest him in historical movies and books, but he needs more. How else can I get him motivated? – EP
