Regular Medication Reviews Important for People Taking Multiple Drugs
Dear Carol: I’ve read your articles about drugs that are bad for older brains. My dad takes a long list of drugs for heart issues, blood pressure, and arthritis, plus a chronic skin problem. He and I are both fine with that since if he needs them, he needs them. None of them are considered particularly bad for older adults. Still, don’t multiple medications mean more risks? His doctor is always in a hurry. I realize this is the fault of the system, not the doctor. Still, could a more careful exam come up with an alternative option to more medications? What about interactions? Should we be more proactive about this? He’s only 82 and still has many interests. Besides, I want to keep him around as long as I can. – GL
