How Family Caregivers Can Obtain Medical Equipment for In-Home Care
Dear Carol: My mom requires 24/7 care, but she doesn’t qualify for hospice. Somehow, I need to obtain a lifting device and other mobility aids, and the prices are scary. I have a long list of questions about how we’re supposed to hold down jobs, raise kids, and still provide care. For now, could you just explain how non-wealthy families are supposed to afford expensive medical equipment like care facilities use? We’re new to this, so suggestions for where to begin looking would be welcome. – KH
Dear KH: I’m saddened that you and others face these challenges. The reality is that families are expected to shoulder much of the care that was once provided in medical facilities. In theory, caring for family at home sounds great, and if funding for assistance with in-home medical care and nonmedical support with practical tasks had kept pace, it would be more sustainable.
